FLAVONOIDS AND RELATED STRUCTURES

This family of compounds is a large homogeneous group that accounts for many properties we all recognize: the color of flowers and the flavor of numerous juices. Many flavonoids are potent antioxidants with antiinflammatory properties; inhibition of protein kinase C has been described for apigenin [Eur J Cancer 32A: 146 (1996)] and genistein []; others (e.g, genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A) have estrogenic effects with potential as hormone substitutes. The title encompasses flavones, isoflavones, bisflavones, their reduced counterparts and bis-adducts.
